It is clear that Australians have much to be thankful for as 2017 comes to a close. As a nation, we enjoy a multitude of strengths, including a free and fair society, a robust economy, and the riches of cultural diversity. The holiday season provides an opportunity to reflect on our many blessings, and to look back on what has been a remarkable year.
I am grateful for the privilege of representing the Australian people, and in guiding our nation to meet the challenges and opportunities of this era of incredible change. Regulatory reform coupled with investment in infrastructure, education, and research, is driving more growth and prosperity, while our commitment to international trade and investment continues to support regional and global economic integration.
In this regard, I sincerely thank the staff and readers of Nichigo Press for your contributions to furthering the business and community links between Australia and Japan.
This year, we marked the 60th anniversary of our two countries’ Commerce Agreement. Japanese investment continues to make an enormous contribution to the Australian economy, and the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership has provided great opportunities for exporters and consumers alike.
Increasingly, Japan and Australia are cooperating as partners across a range of issues. We are seeing, in both countries, government and business leaders advocating for the importance of open, rules-based global trade in recognition of the benefits not just to our own economies but across the world.
In the year to come, I look forward to seeing even closer ties between our nations, and the strengthening of a relationship that has long been one of our most significant. With these thoughts in mind, I wish the Japanese Australian community a wonderful New Year and all the very best for 2018.
The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP
Prime Minister of Australia
I would like to take this opportunity to wish the readers of Nichigo Press a Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous and happy New Year.
The holiday season provides an opportunity to reflect on our achievements and as Australians we have many reasons to be grateful for living in our wonderful country.
Australia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world and our multicultural roots are one of the things that make our country so great. Since the end of World War II, Australia has welcomed more than seven million people from countries around the globe who, in return have made significant contributions to building an economically strong, culturally diverse and cohesive nation.
Our values, culture and national identity continue to attract people from around the globe to our shores. We are seeing record numbers of temporary visas being granted to people who want to work, study and holiday here and record numbers of applications for people seeking Australian citizenship.
We’ve opened Australia up to the world and, as we begin a New Year, we look forward to joining together to ensure our nation continues to prosper for generations to come.
Once again, I wish you all a very happy and successful year ahead and hope it brings peace and happiness to all.
