Iori’s warm ambiance

Nestled in the Sydney Building of East Row in the city, Iori has stood as one of Canberra’s most beloved Japanese dining destinations since its establishment in 2001. Upon stepping through its doors, you’ll forget the busy atmosphere of the CBD, as it is replaced by the warmth of traditional Japanese hospitality. Greeted by friendly staff dressed in traditional attire amidst the backdrop of Japanese cultural decorations, you will feel the warmth and comfort of Iori.

The name ‘Iori’ was inspired by the tea master Sen no Rikyu’s tea hut. “It’s like a small hut, a cosy little place, but we aim to provide the utmost hospitality, embracing the spirit of tea,”shared Iori’s owner/chef Mamoru Aizawa.

Introducing Iori’s owner/chef Mamoru Aizawa

Aizawa’s culinary journey began in his teenage years living in Japan, where he immersed himself in the art of sushi-making and traditional Japanese cuisine. Obtaining his cooking license at the early age of 18, he ventured to Australia the following year in 1989. Aizawa first began working in a newly opened Japanese restaurant in Newcastle that was owned and operated by his father’s friend. Since then, Aizawa has worked in numerous restaurants across Australia, including in Sydney, the Gold Coast, Cairns, and Melbourne, before ultimately choosing Canberra as the site to realise his culinary vision with the inception of Iori in 2001.

Aizawa’s experience proved to be valuable as Iori won numerous awards throughout the years such as the I Love Food Award’s ‘State winner for Favourite Japanese Restaurant’ for 6 consecutive years and being featured in the Canberra Times’ Top 20 Restaurants for 3 years in a row.

According to Aizawa, the essence of Iori’s success lies in “maintaining the traditional Japanese service or hospitality.” But that’s not all. The secret behind every meticulously crafted dish is Aizawa’s wish to honour his late father. “My father passed away in 2013, and unfortunately, he never got to taste my cooking. So, I always try to make dishes that he would have enjoyed. It’s not something you can see, but it’s about the sentiment,” shared Aizawa.

Indulge in Iori’s Degustation Menu
