As I am engaged in Ikebana, I find it very difficult to arrange the flowers casually in a glass container. It is because there are many rules to follow when using a transparent container. The rules include the use of the see-through characteristics of the containers, how to arrange the branches, stems, water, and flowers to be seen through the glass, beautifully. We are also expected to make use of the characteristics of the light that is refracted when it enters the water, and to take advantage of the design characteristics if using a patterned glass container.
Having said that, I assume most of the containers in your home are transparent crystal ones. I believe Ikebana in a glass container is beautiful as long as it is arranged beautifully, with a light touch. Placing your favourite flowers lively in your favourite position is enough, as the essence of Ikebana lies in there. Let’s make an arrangement as you desire, feeling at ease. It is also fun to decide which flower will be the main element or whether it will be something that will make the main material stand out, among the flowers which happen to be placed together. You may decide to be free from formal conventions. The glass container is fragile and delicate, so it is difficult to put in thick branches or massive flowers. Even if you place them in, some materials will slip, and the container won’t be able to hold them still.
Immediately after picking up a glass container, put flowers in it as you desire. You will definitely see yourself there. You will see only your appearance as in a mirror, while Ikebana will show your inner beauty. Ikebana expresses beauty in its own way, a beauty which only its arranger can see. The arranged Ikebana will reflect the image of it arranger him/herself. Please, let’s try Ikebana using a transparent glass container in a lightsome mood.
