INTERVIEW WITH KOSHU WINEMAKERS AND WINE TASTING

“Why did you come?” was the first thing Mr Aruga, CEO of Katsunuma Jozo Winery asked Phillip when he visited his winery. Katsunuma Jozo is one of the leading family owned wineries in Yamanashi prefecture who produce very high quality Koshu wine. Phillip and Rika visited their winery in the hope of learning more about Koshu, a Japanese aromatic grape variety, and how it is processed. But to Mr Aruga, it felt as if a know it all foreigner had come to “instruct” them what they should be doing. The intended ten minute talk evolved into a two hour discussion, talking about their views on wine and the vineyard, and how Phillip wanted to learn from their team. Since then, Phillip and Rika have visited the winery for six consecutive years, making Koshu wine in Japan and learning about the wine and the people.

SPEAKERS PROFILE

Mr Phillip Moraghan
Started career working at AIDC (government investment bank) and sent to a Swiss MBA course, where he was enchanted by the French pinot noir. Came back to Australia and continued to work in banking and at the same time set up Curly Flat Vineyard. He departed banking in 2000 and concentrated on the vineyard/winery business. Phillip and Rika met through wine. Since then, he has departed Curly Flat and the two are currently setting up Shimora Wines at Little Hampton, Victoria. His hobby includes clay shooting, which he enjoys with his local mates.  

Dr Rika Shimo-Moraghan
Started as a technical writer at Sony. Migrated to Australia and experienced various jobs, including teaching Japanese/interpreting/translating. While most of her time now is spent at Shimora Wines, mainly in the vineyard, she continues to do some interpreting/translating. In 2017, she completed a wine science degree at La Trobe University. Her hobby is playing the piano, which she recommenced after nearly 50 years.
