When we first married, Chizuru would sometimes burn Shoyeido’s Nijo, filling our home with serenity. I had never smelt anything so divine. In our home, as in many Japanese homes, incense is burned to honor our guests, to create an atmosphere, to clear away bad spirits and welcome good ones, or for our enjoyment and wellbeing. Shoyeido incense transforms a space like fine music or a painting hanging on a wall. It would be fair to say that to the Japanese, incense is of both the physical and divine worlds.
