Australia’s Biggest Spring Festival ‘Floriade’ / A Tour of Canberra’s Events #7

Beautiful flowers right as you enter!

My name is Joy and I am an intern at Nichigo Press. Although my previous article introduced Canberra’s winter event, the seasons have completely changed and now, the 7th event I’d like to introduce is a wonderful spring event called ‘Floriade,’ which took place from September 16th to October 15th

What is ‘Floriade’?

A popular spot for a photoshoot!

‘Floriade’ is an annual festival of flowers and entertainment held at Commonwealth Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. It features extensive displays of flowering bulbs incorporating sculptures and other artistic features. The name ‘Floriade’ comes from a Latin verb form ‘floreat’ which is derived from ‘floreo’ meaning “to be decked or covered with flowers.”

This event, which attracts tourists not only from across Australia but also from overseas, has become one of the most important regular events for tourism in Canberra, taking place every year from mid-September to mid-October. It’s a charming spring festival worthy of its title as Australia’s largest, with over a million bulbs and annuals planted each year. Additionally, from 28th September to 1st October, an enchanting illumination event called ‘NightFest’ is held as a separate event.

The theme for 2023 was ‘Floral Wonderland’

Cheshire Cat found within the flowers

At ‘Floriade,’ there’s a theme every year, and for 2023, it was ‘Floral Wonderland.’ While admiring the flowers, I unexpectedly stumbled upon the Cheshire Cat from ‘Alice in Wonderland’!

A sign introducing the ‘Fantasy Garden’

The delightful garden known as the ‘Fantasy Garden’ suggests the idea of entering a new world, or what they call a ‘Floral Wonderland.’ Transitioning from purple and blue tulips to bright yellow and red tulips, the contrast of colours created a magical sensation, hinting at a transition into a world of magic and wonder.

Plenty of stalls and rides to enjoy

At this event, not only flowers but also stalls selling food, souvenirs, and more were gathered. There were plenty of rides and entertainment options, including a Ferris wheel and a popular jumping castle for children. ‘Floriade’ is carefully designed to ensure visitors could spend a fulfilling day enjoying the flowers and entertainment.

Making you feel the warmth of spring

Colourful flowers that evoke ‘spring’

‘Floriade’ was a delightful event where one could truly feel the transition from the cold winter to the warm spring, spending quality time with family and friends while admiring the beautiful array of flowers. True to its theme of ‘Floral Wonderland’, it felt like being transported to a different world guided by the flowers. I am very excited to see what theme and flower displays await us this year!
