HANANINGEN KIMONO WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS

In this workshop designed for parents and children, participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in traditional kimono culture, with a unique twist! Instructor Yuka Konno of Hananingen Sydney will teach parents how to style their children’s hair with real flowers, before the kids are dressed in kimono by professional staff.

Held in relation to the Tailored With Love exhibition and event series, these workshops allow attendees to learn more about children’s kimono dress holidays such as Shichi-Go-San, while experiencing firsthand a longstanding aspect of traditional Japanese culture. At the end of the workshop, there will be plenty of photo opportunities while the children are dressed up and wearing their floral creations.

BOOKING NOTICE

This workshop is suitable for children aged 6-13 years old. Bookings strictly allow ONE parent/guardian and ONE child to participate. Please note that kimono availability is based on each child’s age and height. If a certain kimono size is unavailable, there is an option for children to wear yukata (unlined cotton summer kimono) as an alternative.

ABOUT HANANINGEN

Hananingen, a Japanese floral arrangement technique, has reached Australia with florist Yuka Konno becoming the first person in Australia to open a studio in Sydney in 2019, dedicated to the unique floral style. Yuka has won numerous honors, most recently “Best Studio Florist” at the Sydney Markets Fresh Award.

Hananingen, which translates to “flower human” in Japanese, is a style of arranging fresh flowers on people’s heads and bodies. It is a new form of artwork that fuses flowers and people.

Yuka started this business with the hope that wearing flowers would bring out the beauty of a person and from that experience, people would love themselves, love flowers more and that the cycle of happiness would grow. In this workshop, Yuka will perform Hananingen arrangements, in collaboration with traditional Japanese kimono for children.

ABOUT TAILORED WITH LOVE

Tailored With Love: Children’s Kimono Throughout Generations showcases traditional Japanese children’s clothing and artefacts, dating from the Edo period to the early Showa period. Curated by Iwao Nagasaki, this exhibition guides viewers through 200 years of children’s kimono styles, each representative of the eras during which they were crafted.
