From pretty cherry-blossom-themed bento boxes to stylish chopsticks and traditional furoshiki wrapping cloths, MAJIME LIFE offers a vibrant selection of Japanese bento boxes and lunchware in Australia.
“A bento box is more than just a simple container. I think it is a communication tool that packs heart,” says Kenlee Nakasugi, owner of Majime Life.
Kenlee wants to bring more of the Japanese bento culture and routine to Australia. The visual appeal of food is just as important as the contents, and bento boxes are an integral part of that. That thought was the impetus for starting the business.
Why MAJIME LIFE?
Kenlee previously worked as a bio-applications scientist in the commercial sector, both in Japan and Australia. He started his online business in 2021, selling a small selection of made-in- Japan bento boxes and related products.
Regarding his previous job, he says, “Even if you have a good job and live a comfortable life, you can still ‘lose’ yourself. ‘MAJIME LIFE’ literally translates to ‘serious’ or ‘keen’ life. I must be willing to divert from my ‘set’ path to find what is really fulfilling. These thoughts are engraved in the business name, and it is kind of an antithesis. I wanted to leverage my Japanese heritage and point of view to bring Japanese culture and products to Australia.”
Many adults in Australia pack their own lunches, often in mundane containers. Just like clothes and shoes, aesthetics of a bento box can make you feel good about your day. There is a seeming dearth of Japanese-style bento box choices in Australia, so Kenlee decided to fill that niche himself.
Great products with Japanese sense and ingenuity
The bento boxes sold by MAJIME LIFE ccare made with the utmost care by craftsmen from brands and companies that originate and specialise in the Japanese lacquerware industry. They bring traditional techniques and passion to modern needs. The designs are practical and functional—essences of Japanese philosophy. Customer satisfaction in the business is also very high, as Kenlee strives not only to offer high quality products but also Japanese service and hospitality.
Since its beginnings, MAJIME LIFE has added many products, particularly ju-bako (tiered lunch boxes), Japanese chopsticks and furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloths). “The dream is to create the go-to Japanese lunchware shop in Australia,” says Kenlee.
