THE SKI RESORT ON THE HIGHEST PEAK IN JAPAN─YOKOTEYAMA, Shiga Kogen

SHARE

A CAPTIVATING MOUNTAINTOP CAFÉ, AND SNOWCAT TOURS

Towering above at 2,307 metres above sea level, the highest in Japan, is Yokoteyama Ski Resort with the best snow quality and views in all of Shiga Kogen. The reason you may not have heard of or been to this area before on a visit to Shiga Kogen is that it is not connected to other resorts in the area. But don’t let that deter you, as Yokoteyama has a range of courses to cater to all beginners, veterans, families, and even pro skiers—there’s something for everyone. If you’re there to ski your days away then a stay at a hotel at the mountain’s base will allow you to shred up the highest courses in all of Japan with ease. My recommendations would be the “Hotel & Onsen 2307 Shiga Kogen” and the “Shiga Palace Hotel,” both of which feature hot spring facilities and have great options for activities away from the snow. Carve up the slopes and then relax like you mean it with a stay at these hotels.

For a place to take a break on the slopes, head on over to the “Crumpet Café” near the top of the mountain. The freshly made crumpets are just one of the many light dishes and desserts that keep people coming back for more.

Yokoteyama Ski Resort also offers snowcat tours at night. Snowcat tours involve hopping onto a snowcat (a snow vehicle used at ski resorts) to visit nighttime courses that are usually closed. Tour participants are treated to amazing nighttime views and the beautiful starry night sky that can’t normally be seen otherwise as they cruise through the courses on snowcats. Spending a special evening in the serenity of the snowy mountain as you feel the glisten of the calm snow is bound to make for an amazing experience.
